Mission Trip - Nigeria 2011 - In Gusau, Zamfara State.

Our first day in Gusau: Thursday, July 28, 2011.

Our purpose for coming to Gusau was:

  • to see the progress on Grace International School, which will be the Primary/High School of the Gusau Diocese.
  • to meet with the Diocesan Education Committee, to understand the current needs of both teachers and pupils. For this reason two of "the Gusau Six" are educators; Elaine Chagnon and Justine Lavoie.
  • to find out from Bishop John, the building committee and other knowledgeable local people what steps need to be taken for future fundraising and development.

Visit to the site of Grace International School.

A new and exciting opportunity

When we arrived in Gusau, Bishop John in formed us of an exciting new opportunity now open to them. A parcel of land, adjoining the back of their existing piece of land, has become available for purchase. The Diocese wants to purchase this property because they have realized that the the existing property is inadequate for a school. They would be unable to get accreditation because there insufficient space for all the facilities required for accreditation. This extra parcel with almost quadruple the the size of the GIS property.

In the photo above, the extent of the property is outlined by a line of brush along the left, the far back (just before the buildings in the background) and down the right side.

The asking price is approximately US$60,000, the Diocese has received a donation of US$30,000 from a businessman in Lagos. This has been given as a down payment already. The seller requires the final payment by the end of November.

The challenge

Raising so much money in such a short time is a definite challenge and an opportunity to look to God in faith to accomplish this. We and our brothers and sisters in Gusau are praying that God will move many to give generously to this project.
